Home Maintenance 101: How-to Clean Your Gutter

Clogged gutters are one of the leading causes of water damage to private residences. If your gutter is clogged, or you simply want to give it a good clean, consider the following tips.

Get the right tools. Prep for your gutter clean-out with the right tools. They make hose attachments specifically designed for gutters, but a regular hose will do the trick, too. You will also need a ladder, a trowel, buckets. If you're cleaning from the ground, consider a hooked gutter cleaning attachment for a leaf blower.

Climbing? Have a spotter. If you're cleaning from a ladder, make sure to have a friend or family member there to spot you.

Start at a downspout. It's smartest to start your clean-out near a downspout to clear a path for the items to wash out.

Nix any clogs. Remove larger debris like leaves and sticks with a trowel. If the downspout is really clogged, you may need to remove it from the pipe to clean as needed.

Flush. Once you've removed the larger items, flush the finer material with a hose, beginning away from the downspout, which should be cleared.

By clearing your gutter at least twice a year, you help ward off harmful water damage, and can more easily keep on top of your home maintenance.
